Surf Boards On Board! As Solomon Airlines Supports WSSA

Posted on April 28, 2024 at 11:29 PM in General News

Solomon Airlines has stepped to support the Western Solomon Surfing Association (WSSA) by delivering a shipment of surfboards from Australia for an exciting new initiative, set to be announced in June.

Despite the world-class waves, accessing surfing has always been challenging for local communities in the Western Province due to equipment limitations.

For those who do have access to equipment, surfing holds significant importance, fostering strong community bonds.

WSSA is currently establishing a surf school as part of a broader project aimed at breaking down barriers to accessing the sport. The association aims to leverage surfing as a catalyst for broader change, particularly in the areas of gender equality and women's empowerment.

“We are incredibly grateful for the support from Solomon Airlines, who not only connect surfing and tourism to our country, but also help bridge this equipment gap for our community,” said Jeremy Baea, Chairman of the Western Solomon Surfing Association.

“Surfing unifies our community here and offers immense benefits and we thank Solomon Airlines for their commitment to our mission," he said.

Solomon Airlines is flying in the surf school's initial supply of surfboards free of charge, transported from Brisbane to Gizo via Honiara.

Established in 2014, WSSA is based in the Western Province and is committed to advancing surfing in the Solomon Islands. The organisation actively promotes the sport through events and community programs, recognising it as a powerful tool for community building, showcasing local youth talent, promoting marine and environmental conservation, and advancing gender equality.
